Hyundai Accent (HC): Maintenance / Emission control system

Contents:

The emission control system on your Hyundai Accent is covered by a written limited warranty. Review the warranty details in the Owner’s Handbook & Warranty Information booklet supplied with the vehicle.

Your Hyundai Accent is equipped with an emission control system designed to meet applicable emissions regulations. The system is made up of three main parts, as follows.

(1) Crankcase emission control system
(2) Evaporative emission control system
(3) Exhaust emission control system

To help ensure proper operation, have your vehicle inspected and maintained by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer according to the maintenance schedule in this manual. Using the correct parts and following the service intervals helps protect performance, fuel economy, and long-term reliability.

NOTICE

For the Inspection and Maintenance Test (with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system)

  • To prevent misfiring during dynamometer testing, turn the ESC system off by pressing the ESC switch (ESC OFF light illuminated).
  • After the test is completed, turn the ESC system back on by pressing the ESC switch again.

1. Crankcase Emission Control System

The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system helps reduce air pollution by routing blow-by gases away from the crankcase. Fresh, filtered air enters the crankcase through the air intake hose, mixes with blow-by gases, and then flows through the PCV valve into the induction system. Keeping the PCV system in good condition supports smooth idle quality and consistent engine operation.

2. Evaporative Emission Control System Including Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR)

The Evaporative Emission Control System is designed to keep fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. The ORVR system helps capture vapors during refueling by directing them into a canister, reducing emissions while you fill up at the gas station.

Canister

Fuel vapors formed in the fuel tank are absorbed and stored in the onboard canister. When the engine is running, the vapors stored in the canister are drawn into the surge tank through the purge control solenoid valve so they can be burned as part of normal combustion.

Purge Control Solenoid Valve (PCSV)

The PCSV is managed by the Engine Control Module (ECM). When engine coolant temperature is low during idle, the PCSV remains closed so evaporated fuel is not introduced into the engine. After the engine warms during normal driving, the PCSV opens to allow the vapors to be routed into the engine.

3. Exhaust Emission Control System

The Exhaust Emission Control System is highly effective at reducing exhaust emissions while maintaining strong Hyundai Accent performance. Avoid unnecessary repeat start attempts; if the engine does not start, diagnose the cause rather than repeatedly cranking, because excessive restarting can stress components within the emission system.

Engine exhaust (carbon monoxide) precautions

• Carbon monoxide may be present along with other exhaust fumes. If you detect exhaust odor of any kind inside the vehicle, open all windows immediately for fresh air, and have your Hyundai Accent inspected and repaired as soon as possible.

WARNING

Engine exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide (CO). Although colorless and odorless, CO is dangerous and can be lethal if inhaled. Follow the safety instructions here to avoid CO poisoning.

WARNING

CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING

Engine exhaust and a wide variety of automobile components and parts, including components found in the interior furnishings in a vehicle, contain or emit chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects and reproductive harm. In addition, certain fluids contained in vehicles and certain products of component wear contain or emit chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

  • Do not run the engine in confined or closed areas (such as garages) any longer than necessary to move the vehicle in or out.
  • When stopped in an open area for more than a short time with the engine running, adjust the ventilation system (as needed) to bring outside air into the cabin.
  • Never remain in a parked vehicle for an extended time with the engine running.
  • If the engine stalls or fails to start, avoid repeated restart attempts that could damage the emission control system.

Operating precautions for catalytic converters

WARNING

On the Hyundai Accent, the exhaust system and catalytic converter become extremely hot during operation and can remain hot for a period of time immediately after the engine has been running. To avoid SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH:

  • Do not park, idle, or drive the Hyundai Accent over or near flammable objects such as grass, vegetation, paper, leaves, or other debris. A hot exhaust system can ignite flammable items underneath your vehicle.
  • Keep away from the exhaust system and catalytic converter or you may get burned. Also, do not remove the heat shield around the exhaust system, do not seal the bottom of the vehicle, and do not coat the vehicle for corrosion control. Under certain conditions, these actions may increase the risk of fire.

Your Hyundai Accent is equipped with a catalytic converter emission control device designed to reduce harmful exhaust emissions while supporting proper engine performance.

To help prevent damage to the catalytic converter and to protect your Hyundai Accent, take the following precautions:

  • Use only UNLEADED FUEL for gasoline engines.
  • Do not operate the vehicle when there are signs of engine malfunction, such as misfire, rough running, or a noticeable loss of performance. If the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminates, have the system inspected as soon as possible.
  • Do not misuse or abuse the engine. Examples of misuse include coasting with the engine off and descending steep grades in gear with the engine off.
  • Do not operate the engine at high idle speed for extended periods (5 minutes or more).
  • Do not modify or tamper with any part of the engine or emission control system. All inspections and adjustments must be performed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • Avoid driving with extremely low fuel level. If you run out of gasoline, it may cause the engine to misfire and result in excessive loading and overheating of the catalytic converter.

Engine Oil and Filter The engine oil and filter should be changed at the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. If the Hyundai Accent is being driven in severe conditions, more frequent oil and filter changes are required to protect the engine from accelerated wear and sludge buildup. Drive Belts Inspect all drive belts for evidence of cuts, cracks, excessive wear or oil saturation and replace if necessary.
