Hyundai Accent (HC) (2017 - 2022) Owner's Manual / Infotainment System / Forward Collision-avoidance Assist (FCA) - Radar Type

Contents:

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist is designed to help reduce or help avoid accident risk. It recognizes the distance to the vehicle ahead through sensors (for example, radar), and, if necessary, warns the driver or applies emergency braking.

❈ Radar type FCA does not recognize for pedestrians in front.

WARNING

Forward Collision-avoidance Assist is a supplemental system and is not a substitute for safe driving practices.

It is the responsibility of the driver to always check the speed and distance to the vehicle ahead to ensure it is safe to use FCA.

WARNING

Take the following precautions when using Forward Collisionavoidance Assist :

  • This system is only a supplemental system and it is not intended to, nor does it replace the need for extreme care and attention of the driver. The sensing range and objects detectable by the sensors are limited. Pay attention to the road conditions at all times.
  • NEVER drive too fast in accordance with the road conditions or while cornering.
  • Always drive cautiously to prevent unexpected and sudden situations from occurring. FCA does not stop the vehicle completely and is not a collision avoidance system.

Small addition: Keep the front radar area clean (free of heavy mud, snow, or ice) so your Hyundai Accent can detect vehicles ahead as effectively as possible, and remember that driver assistance may be limited in certain weather or visibility conditions.

System Setting and Activation

System setting

• The driver can activate Forward Collision-avoidance Assist (FCA) in the Hyundai Accent by placing the ignition switch to the ON position and by selecting the following menu path on the LCD display:

'User Settings → Driving Assist → Forward Collision-avoidance Assist (FCA)'

FCA deactivates when the driver deselects the system setting. If you prefer to drive without this driver-assistance feature in your Hyundai Accent, confirm the OFF status on the display before continuing.

The warning light illuminates on the LCD display when you cancel FCA. The driver can monitor FCA ON/OFF status on the LCD display at any time. Also, the warning light illuminates when ESC (Electronic Stability Control) is turned off, because some Hyundai Accent safety systems coordinate their operation.

If the warning light remains ON when FCA is activated, have the system checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

  • The driver can select the initial warning activation time on the LCD display. Go to the 'User Settings → Driving Assist → Forward Collision-avoidance Assist → Late/Normal/Early'. Choose the setting that best matches your comfort level and typical Hyundai Accent driving environment.

The options for the initial Forward Collision-avoidance Assist include the following:

- Early :

When this condition is selected, the initial Forward Collision-avoidance Assist is activated earlier. This setting maximizes the amount of distance between the vehicle ahead before the initial warning occurs, which many drivers prefer for added time to react.

If the 'Early' condition feels too sensitive in stop-and-go traffic, select the 'Normal' condition.

Even though 'Early' is selected, if the front vehicle suddenly stops, the initial warning activation time may not seem fast in every situation. Always keep a safe following distance in your Hyundai Accent regardless of the setting.

- Normal :

When this condition is selected, the initial Forward Collision-avoidance Assist is activated normally. This setting allows for a nominal amount of distance between the vehicle ahead before the initial warning occurs and is suitable for most everyday Hyundai Accent driving.

- Late :

When this condition is selected, the initial Forward Collision-avoidance Assist is activated later than normal. This setting reduces the amount of distance between the vehicle ahead before the initial warning occurs.

Select 'Late' when traffic is light and when driving speed is slow, but remember that a later warning provides less time to respond.

Small addition: If you frequently drive your Hyundai Accent in heavy urban traffic, many drivers find 'Normal' to be a balanced choice, while 'Early' may be more comfortable for highway commuting where longer following distances are common.

Prerequisite for activation

FCA is on and ready when FCA is selected on the LCD display and when the following prerequisites are satisfied:

- ESC (Electronic Stability Control) is on.
- Driving speed exceeds approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). (FCA is only activated within a certain speed range.)
- When FCA recognizes a vehicle in front. (FCA may not recognize every obstacle or provide warnings and braking in every situation, so do not rely on FCA to stop the vehicle in instances where the driver sees an obstacle and has the ability to apply the brakes).

WARNING

  • Completely stop the vehicle on a safe location before operating the switch on the steering wheel to activate /deactivate FCA.
  • FCA automatically activates upon placing the ignition switch to the ON position. The driver can deactivate FCA by canceling the system setting on the LCD display.
  • FCA automatically deactivates upon canceling ESC (Electronic Stability Control). When ESC is canceled, FCA cannot be activated on the LCD display. In this case, the FCA warning light will illuminate, but it does not indicate a malfunction.

FCA Warning Message and System Control

FCA produces warning messages, warning alarms, and emergency braking based on the level of risk of a frontal collision, such as when a vehicle ahead suddenly brakes or when there is insufficient following distance from the vehicle in front. In the Hyundai Accent, these alerts are designed to support the driver’s decision-making, not replace attentive driving.

Collision Warning (1st warning)

  • The warning message appears on the LCD display with the warning alarms.
  • The vehicle will reduce its speed to a certain limit.
    - The brake control activates within an arranged limit to ease the impact from a collision. Maximum brake control is activated just before the collision.

Brake operation

  • In an urgent situation, the braking system enters into the ready status for prompt reaction against the driver’s depressing the brake pedal.
  • FCA provides additional braking power for optimum braking performance when the driver depresses the brake pedal.
  • The braking control is automatically deactivated when the driver sharply depresses the accelerator pedal, or when the driver abruptly operates the steering wheel.
  • FCA braking control is automatically canceled when risk factors disappear.

CAUTION

The driver should always use extreme caution while operating the vehicle, whether or not there is a warning message or alarm from FCA.

WARNING

FCA braking control cannot completely stop the vehicle nor avoid all collisions. The driver is responsible for driving safely and controlling the vehicle.

WARNING

FCA logic operates within certain parameters, such as the distance from the vehicle, the speed of the vehicle ahead, and the driver's vehicle speed. Certain conditions such as inclement weather and road conditions may affect the operation of FCA.

WARNING

Never deliberately drive dangerously to activate the system.

FCA Sensor

Hyundai Accent front radar sensor location for Forward Collision-avoidance Assist

In order for FCA to operate properly, always make sure the sensor cover or sensor is clean and free of dirt, snow, and debris. Dirt, snow, or foreign substances on the sensor cover or sensor may adversely affect the sensing performance of the sensor, which can reduce FCA effectiveness on your Hyundai Accent.

NOTICE

  • Do not apply a license plate frame or foreign objects such as a bumper sticker or a bumper guard or number plate molding near the radar sensor. Doing so may adversely affect the sensing performance of the radar.
  • Always keep the radar sensor and cover clean and free of dirt and debris.
  • Use only a soft cloth to wash the vehicle. Do not spray pressurized water directly on the sensor or sensor cover.
  • Be careful not to apply unnecessary force on the radar sensor or sensor cover. If the sensor is forcibly moved out of proper alignment, FCA may not operate correctly. In this case, a warning message may not be displayed. Have the vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • If the front bumper becomes damaged in the area around the radar sensor, FCA may not operate properly. Have the vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • Use only genuine HYUNDAI parts to repair or replace a damaged sensor or sensor cover. Do not apply paint to the sensor cover.
  • Playing the vehicle audio system at high volume may make it difficult to hear FCA warning sounds.

Small addition: In winter conditions, clear packed snow or ice from the front bumper area before driving your Hyundai Accent, and remember that heavy rain, fog, or glare can reduce sensor performance—stay alert and be ready to brake at all times.

Warning message and warning light

Forward Collision Avoidance Assist (FCA) disabled.

Radar blocked

If the radar sensor cover becomes blocked by dirt, snow, slush, or road debris, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) operation may stop temporarily. If this occurs in your Hyundai Accent, a warning message will appear on the LCD display to indicate the radar is not able to detect properly. Remove any dirt, snow, or debris and clean the radar sensor cover before operating FCA again.

FCA will operate normally once the foreign substance is removed and the sensor area is clear. However, FCA may not properly operate in some environments (for example, open terrain), where few objects are detected immediately after turning the engine ON. Always continue to drive attentively and keep a safe following distance in the Hyundai Accent, even when FCA is available.

Small addition: In winter conditions, check the front bumper area frequently—packed snow or ice can quickly cover the radar zone and temporarily disable Hyundai Accent FCA until the area is cleared.

System Malfunction

Check Forward Collision Avoidance Assist

  • When FCA is not working properly, the FCA warning light ( Hyundai Accent FCA warning light icon) will illuminate and the warning message will appear for a few seconds. After the message disappears, the master warning light ( Hyundai Accent master warning light icon) will illuminate. In this case, have the Hyundai Accent inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • The FCA warning message may appear along with the illumination of the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) warning light.

WARNING

  • FCA is only a supplemental system for the driver’s convenience. The driver is responsible for controlling the vehicle operation. Do not solely depend on FCA. Rather, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce the driving speed.
  • In certain instances and under certain driving conditions, FCA may activate prematurely. This initial warning message appears on the LCD display with a warning chime. Also, in certain instances the front radar sensor may not detect the vehicle ahead. FCA may not activate and the warning message will not be displayed.
  • If there is a malfunction with FCA, the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist is not applied even though the braking system is operating normally.
  • If the vehicle in front stops suddenly, you may have less control of the brake system. Therefore, always keep a safe distance between your Hyundai Accent and the vehicle in front of you.
  • FCA may activate during braking and the vehicle may stop suddenly, shifting loose objects toward the passengers. Always keep loose objects secured.
  • FCA may not activate if the driver applies the brake pedal to avoid a collision.
  • The brake control may not work, possibly causing a collision, if a vehicle in front abruptly stops. Always pay extreme caution.
  • Occupants may get injured, if the vehicle abruptly stops by the activated FCA. Pay extreme caution.

WARNING

  • FCA operates only to detect vehicles in front of the vehicle.
  • FCA does not operate when the vehicle is in reverse.
  • FCA is not designed to detect other objects on the road.
  • FCA does not detect vehicles in the opposite lane.
  • FCA does not detect cross traffic vehicles that are approaching.
  • FCA cannot detect the driver approaching the side view of a parked vehicle (for example on a dead end street.)

In these cases, you must maintain a safe braking distance, and if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce the driving speed in order to maintain a safe distance.

Limitations of the System

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) is designed to monitor the vehicle ahead on the roadway through radar signals to warn the driver that a collision is imminent, and if necessary, apply emergency braking.

In certain situations, the radar sensor may not be able to detect the vehicle ahead. In these cases, FCA may not operate normally. The driver must pay careful attention in the following situations where Hyundai Accent FCA operation may be limited.

Detecting vehicles

The radar sensor performance may be limited in the following situations, and extra caution is required when driving your Hyundai Accent:

  • The radar sensor is blocked by a foreign object, dirt, snow, ice, or road debris.
  • Inclement weather such as heavy rain, snowfall, fog, or slush obscures the radar sensor’s field of view.
  • Interference is caused by strong electromagnetic waves from nearby equipment.
  • Severe or irregular radar reflections occur due to surrounding objects.
  • The radar sensor recognition capability is temporarily reduced.
  • The vehicle in front is too small to be detected, such as a motorcycle, bicycle, or similar narrow object.
  • The vehicle in front is an oversized vehicle or trailer that is difficult for the camera or radar recognition system to detect, such as a tractor trailer.
  • The Hyundai Accent is driven near areas containing large metal structures, such as construction zones, railroads, or bridges.
  • The vehicle in front is driving erratically, swerving, or changing speed unpredictably.
  • The vehicle is driven through a construction area, on an unpaved road, or over metal surfaces such as railway tracks.
  • The vehicle is driven inside buildings, such as basement or underground parking structures.
  • Adverse road conditions cause excessive vibration of the vehicle while driving.
  • The vehicle in front is moving vertically relative to your driving direction.
  • The vehicle in front is stopped vertically or positioned unusually.
  • The vehicle in front is driving toward your vehicle or reversing.
  • Sensor recognition changes suddenly when passing over a speed bump.
  • The vehicle is subjected to strong or continuous vibration.
  • The vehicle is driving on roundabouts.
  • The radar sensor or sensor cover is damaged or broken.
  • The vehicle passes through a tunnel, toll gate, or partially paved road.

The front radar sensor recognition system may not detect a vehicle traveling ahead on a curved road. This may result in no warning alarm or braking when intervention is required.

Always pay close attention to road and driving conditions, and if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce your driving speed in order to maintain a safe following distance.

Hyundai Accent radar sensor limited detection on curve scenario

The front radar sensor recognition system may fail to detect a vehicle ahead on a curved road, which may result in no warning or braking when necessary.

Always remain alert and ready to brake manually to ensure safe driving in your Hyundai Accent.

Hyundai Accent FCA detection limits when driving on a slope

• Driving on a slope

The performance of Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may be reduced while driving uphill or downhill. The front radar sensor recognition system may not detect the vehicle in front, which could result in unnecessary warnings and braking, or no warning and braking when required. When the system suddenly recognizes a vehicle ahead while cresting a slope, sharp deceleration may occur.

Always keep your eyes forward when driving uphill or downhill, and if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce your speed and maintain a safe distance.

Hyundai Accent FCA limitations during lane change scenario

• Changing lanes

When a vehicle abruptly changes lanes in front of you, FCA may not immediately detect that vehicle. In such situations, you must maintain a safe braking distance and be prepared to apply the brakes manually to reduce your driving speed.

Hyundai Accent FCA limitation in stop-and-go traffic lane merge

When driving in stop-and-go traffic and a stopped vehicle ahead merges out of your lane, FCA may not immediately detect the new vehicle now in front of you. Maintain a safe braking distance and reduce speed manually if required.

Hyundai Accent FCA detection issues with vehicles carrying rear cargo

• Detecting the vehicle in front of you

If the vehicle ahead has cargo extending rearward from the cab, or if it has higher ground clearance, special attention is required. FCA may not detect extended cargo or elevated rear structures. In these situations, maintain a safe braking distance from the rearmost object and reduce speed manually if necessary.

Information

In some situations, FCA may be temporarily canceled due to electromagnetic interference.
