Hyundai Accent (HC): What to Do in an Emergency / If the Engine Will Not Start

Contents:

If the Engine Doesn't Turn Over or Turns Over Slowly

  • Be sure the shift lever is in N (Neutral) or P (Park). The Hyundai Accent engine starts only when the shift lever is in N (Neutral) or P (Park), so verify the selector position before trying again.
  • Check the battery connections to be sure they are clean and tight. Corrosion or loose terminals can reduce starting power and cause slow cranking.
  • Turn on the interior light. If the light dims or goes out when you operate the starter, the battery is drained (or there may be a poor connection).

Do not push or pull the vehicle to start it. This could cause damage to your Hyundai Accent. See instructions for "Jump Starting" provided in this chapter and use the proper procedure instead.

CAUTION

Push or pull starting the vehicle may cause the catalytic converter to overload which can lead to damage to the emission control system. To help protect the Hyundai Accent emissions system, use jump starting only as described below.

If the Engine Turns Over Normally but Doesn't Start

Check the fuel level and add fuel if necessary. If the gauge is near empty, refuel first and then attempt to start the engine again.

If the engine still does not start, have your Hyundai Accent checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. Avoid repeated long cranking attempts, as this can drain the battery further.
