  • Make sure the shift lever is in N (Neutral) or P (Park). The Hyundai Accent engine will only start when the shift lever is in N or P position.
  • Check that the battery terminals are clean, free of corrosion and securely tightened.
  • Turn on the interior light or headlights. If the light becomes noticeably dimmer or goes out completely when you try to start the engine, the battery is most likely discharged.

Important: Never attempt to start your Hyundai Accent by pushing or towing the vehicle. This method can cause serious damage to the transmission and other components. Instead, refer to the "Jump Starting" instructions provided later in this section.

CAUTION

Attempting to push-start or tow-start the Hyundai Accent may severely overload the catalytic converter, which can result in permanent damage to the emission control system.
