Hyundai Accent (HC): Convenience Features of Your Vehicle / Steering wheel

Electric Power Steering (EPS)

The Electric Power Steering (EPS) system assists you with steering the Hyundai Accent for smoother, lighter steering feel. If the vehicle is turned off or if the power steering system becomes inoperative, you may still steer the vehicle, but it will require increased steering effort—especially at low speeds.

If you notice any unusual change in the effort required to steer during normal vehicle operation, or if steering assist feels inconsistent, have the system checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as practical.

CAUTION

If the Electric Power Steering System does not operate normally, the warning light (Hyundai Accent EPS warning light icon on instrument cluster) will illuminate on the instrument cluster. You may steer the vehicle, but it will require increased steering effort. Take your Hyundai Accent to an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and have the system checked as soon as possible.

Information

The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:

  • The steering effort may be high immediately after placing the ignition switch in the ON position. This happens as the system performs EPS diagnostics. When diagnostics are completed, steering effort will return to normal.
  • When battery voltage is low, you might need to apply more steering effort. This is typically temporary and should return to normal after the battery is charged.
  • A click noise may be heard from the EPS relay after the ignition switch is in the ON or LOCK/OFF position.
  • Motor noise may be heard when the vehicle is stopped or moving at low speed; light motor sound can be normal for EPS systems.
  • When you operate the steering wheel in low temperatures, an abnormal noise may occur. If temperature rises, the noise will disappear. This can be a normal condition.
  • If an error is detected, steering assist may be reduced or disabled to help prevent unsafe operation. Instrument cluster warning lights may illuminate and steering effort may increase. If these symptoms occur, drive carefully to a safe area and arrange for inspection.

Tilt Steering / Telescope Steering

Adjust the steering wheel so it points toward your chest, not toward your face. Make sure you can clearly see the instrument cluster warning lights and gauges. After adjusting, push the steering wheel both up and down and in and out (if equipped) to be certain it is locked in position. Always adjust the steering wheel position before driving your Hyundai Accent.

WARNING

NEVER adjust the steering wheel while driving. This may cause loss of vehicle control resulting in an accident.

To change the steering wheel angle and height:

1. Pull down the lock-release lever (1).

2. Adjust the steering wheel to the desired angle (2) and distance forward/back (3).

3. Pull up the lock-release lever to lock the steering wheel in place.

Information

After adjustment, sometimes the lock-release lever may not lock the steering wheel. This is not a malfunction. It can occur when two gears are not engaged correctly. In this case, adjust the steering wheel again and then lock the steering wheel.

CAUTION

While adjusting the steering wheel height, do not push or pull it forcefully, since the fixture can be damaged.

Heated steering wheel

When the ignition switch is in the ON position or when the engine is running, press the heated steering wheel button to warm the steering wheel. The indicator on the button will illuminate. This feature can be especially helpful for cold-weather driving in the Hyundai Accent.

To turn the heated steering wheel off, press the button again. The indicator on the button will turn off.

Information

The heated steering wheel will turn off automatically approximately 30 minutes after it is turned on.

If the engine is turned off while the heated steering wheel is on, the timer function is reset. To use the heated steering wheel again, press the button after restarting the vehicle.

NOTICE

Do not install any cover or accessory on the steering wheel. A cover or accessory could cause damage to the heated steering wheel system or reduce heating performance.

Horn

To sound the horn, press the area indicated by the horn symbol on the steering wheel (see illustration). The horn will operate only when this area is pressed, helping you alert other road users when necessary.

NOTICE

Do not strike the horn severely to operate it, or hit it with your fist. Do not press on the horn with a sharp-pointed object, as this may damage the steering wheel pad or horn switch components.
